Good Reads – September

My entire life has been full of books. From a very young age, I was reading everything from the classics of Jane Austen and Shakespeare to R.L.Stine’s Goosebumps (hey, it was the 90’s), and later Harry Potter and my all-time favorite – the Outlander series. Many of you know we’re currently building a new house and one of the joys of designing the house was knowing I was going to have a library; a proper place for all of my books. Sadly, the last couple of years, I haven’t gotten to read as much as I would like, and one of my 2020 goals was to remedy that.

I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite books so far this year below. Some of these I read, some I listened to as an audio book, and others I’m rereading again for the umpteenth time (if you learn anything about me, it’s that while I love change, I’m also a creature of habit – I’ll reread or rewatch my favorites more times than I can count). I hope you check them out, and love them like I do.

Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

I love pretty much everything I’ve ever read by Kristin Hannah. This book though? I read it in 2 days and cried so many times. The emotional rollercoaster you’ll go through reading this book will take a toll, but my gosh it’s good.

**Warning – this book is set in WWII in occupied France. There are parts that are very graphic and hard to read.**

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

For any Eat, Pray, Love fans, you’ll recognize this author. If there was ever an author whose work I could read over and over again, it’s Liz Gilbert. There’s another one of her books below that I’m also reading currently, but this one I first picked up in 2016 and I’ve read it at least 3 times. It’s not a fiction, rather a business book for creatives, but it’s magical (how could it not be, it’s right there in the title). So many big, inspirational moments for me came from this book.

If you’re a creative, and have never read this, run and buy it now. You’re welcome.

You Are A Badass At Making Money by Jen Sincero

This one I listened to on audiobook, and it’s an easy listen (narrated by Jen herself) with lots of good, build-you-up chapters. It’s chock-full of affirmations and tips on finding your badass within and making the money you know can. I liked this one so much that I think I’ll listen to it again 🙂

City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert

This is the book I was referencing above, and it’s a good one so far. I’ve not finished reading it yet (no spoilers please!), but with the same writing style that I’ve come to love from Gilbert, it’s been a fun one to read. Set in the 1920’s in a theater in NYC, it’s full of glamour and wit. I do love a good historical drama!

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

I can’t believe I’m saying this out loud, but I’d never actually read this! Of all the classics, this was one that I put off because I loved the movie with Wynona Ryder so much and just never picked up the book. The movie is always a favorite during the colder months, and now that it’s starting to feel like fall, I decided to pick it up. It’s everything I love about the movie, times 10.

If you like this list, or end up reading one yourself, let me know! I’m sure I’ll be diving deep into many more books before the year is over – piles of books everywhere – but I’d love to hear what you’re reading!
